I haven’t posted in a while and I think, with good reason. A family member that was in my care passed away. It was bittersweet; I say this because I will miss the person he was before he got sick, but am grateful that the person he became after a massive stroke and more, left his ailing, tortured body.
I’m not posting this to tell you about my personal life. I am posting this because I want you to be prepared for the inevitable – the cost of death. It is expensive to bury or be buried. I feel it is extremely important to either put aside money for this, or buy burial insurance. Yes, I’m going to say it – you need to budget for death.
Can you afford to die?
According to the National Funeral Directors Association, the median price for a funeral is $8343 (2012 was the latest statistic posted). And, that is NOT including the plot! Depending on where you live, or what type of grounds (religious verses non) it can cost anywhere from hundreds to tens of thousands. We paid $15,050 for the plot, over $2,500 in cemetery fees, and about $7,000 for the funeral expenses; grand total of $24,550.
Not everyone is going to spend that much. Depending on the type of funeral How much money do you have set aside? Can you or your family afford this expense, or would it push them over the edge into financial ruin?
No one likes to think about it, but everyone needs to…it is inevitable. Can you afford to bury a loved one? Can your family afford to bury you?
